The beautiful peridot (pronounced pear-a-doe) is this month's birthstone. Yes we are a tad bit late providing this month's birthstone details but it's only because we had to do extensive research on this gorgeous gem (and we were on vacation).
This distinct gem forms deep inside the earth and is brought to the surface by volcanoes. Does anyone else wonder why it's a green color and not red, or just me? The peridot color ranges from olive to lime green, sometimes with a brownish tinge. The green color is due to the presence of iron. The stone gets it's brownish tinge as the iron content gets higher. Some of the finer peridot stones are called "evening emeralds" because the appear greener under artificial light. Not only are these gems colorful, but they are believed to bring the wearer good fortune and protection against nightmares. While we may not go into volcanoes to personally retrieve peridot gemstones we have a variety of birthstone jewelry for all of you August babes!
